MedTronic

The Bakken Research Center (BRC) of Medtronic, established in 1987 in Maastricht, is a significant center for research and innovation. The BRCis the partner for researchers and clinicians in Europe who are working on new and innovative patient therapies and diagnostics.

Role in the project

In the SMASH-HCM project, Medtronic brings its medical device expertise in (1) which data is typically measured and available in an implantable cardiac device to be used for the creation of digital twin models, (2) how data collected in these devices can be integrated into the workflow creating patient specific digital twins, and (3) what is needed to CE-Mark a medical device solution under EU-MDR.

Raphael Schneider

M.Eng.

Raphael Schneider is Sr Engineering Manager of the Data Analytics & Diagnostics team at the Medtronic Bakken Research Center. His passion for data-driven healthcare began early in his career realizing how the usage of data can improve patient outcomes. After receiving the BSc (Hon) in Electronics from the Munich University of Applied Sciences Raphael joined a group of cardiologists at the Hospital of the Munich University of Technology where he together with the cardiologists analysed ECGs to identify patients who were at increased risk of sudden cardiac death.

After 13 years working at the University, Raphael joined the Medtronic Bakken Research Center in 2007 as an R&D Engineer. Since then and in various roles his primary focus has been on how to best extract valuable and actionable information from data collected by medical devices, such as pacemakers and insulin pumps. Over the years, he has gained extensive knowledge of handling and processing medical device data, including privacy regulations, and contributed to the development and release of medical-grade healthcare solutions.
