SMASH-HCM wins Best Paper Award at IEEE EMBC2026

We would like to congratulate Arthur Ben Tolila! His presentation on “Model-based analysis of myocardial strains during stress-test echocardiography” received the Best Paper Award at the 2026 IEEE EMBC last week in Toronto. Out of 2152 full-paper submissions 21 articles received the Best Paper Award.

His paper proposes an analysis of the physiological mechanisms affecting hemodynamics and myocardial deformation during exercise, using a novel cardiovascular-baroreflex in silico model capable of simulating ventricular strain at rest and during stress. Results highlight the importance of chronotropic autonomic pathway, as well as that of myocardial relaxation and baroreflex sensitivity. The proposed approach is promising to study rest-stress echocardiography, with the potential of subject-specific personalisation and future adaptation to HCM.
